ECLSS System Engineer

NASA Kennedy Space Center - Merritt Island, FL

 

Minimum 5 years of directly related expereince is required supporting a space program. 

 

We are looking for a ECLSS System Engineer to join our team to support the NASA KSC Deep Space Logistics Project within the Gateway Program for Artemis missions.

Responsibilities

  • Review system architectures, hardware requirements, designs, assembly procedures, test plans, procedures, and data in support of the Deep Space Logistic Modules Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) to ensure approaches are sound, component/material selection is appropriate for the intended usage, and suitable for the proposed application. 
  • Provide recommendations for improvements to system architectures, hardware requirements, designs, test plans, and procedures if disparities/deficiencies are identified.
  • Ensure NASA requirements are satisfied by design solutions and support production/control board meetings, design, and system reviews.
  • Track ECLSS verification and safety action items and schedules 
  • Provide engineering insight in support for DSL Logistic Modules providers for their Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS). Review plans and schedules for the manufacturing, fabrication, procurement, assembly, testing and certification of the LM ECLSS
  • Evaluate various options, utilizing matrix organization support as necessary, to offer best technical guidance about various trade-offs (technical, schedule, risk, etc.)
  • Work in a team environment and report to senior NASA personnel to provide status on providers development progress and issues.
  • Coordinate with the Gateway ECLSS System Management team on programmatic requirement change requests, design review support, interface definition and control, verification integration, and provide status on high level development progress and issues.
  • Travel as required in support of technical reviews and exchanges. 
  • Work both independently and in a team environment, and report directly and support System Management
  • Select and apply engineering techniques and procedures to analyze and evaluate specific problems, data, or other features of the work which are broad in scope and complexity
  • Provide recommendations for program acceptance of requirements verification, testing, risks and hazards. 
  • Perform other duties as required 

Qualifications

Required Experience:

 

This position has been posted at multiple levels. Depending on the candidate's experience, requirements, and business needs, we reserve the right to consider candidates at any level for which this position has been advertised.

  • BS degree in engineering from an accredited engineering school.
  • 7+ years of directly related experience. 
  • Experience with one or moreof the following:
  • Experience with leak rates, mass flow, chemical analysis and analytics or MATLAB
  • Hands on experience with one or more of the following: fluid systems, pressure vessel/COPVs, valves/solenoids, regulators, fans, commonly used sensors for life support systems (pressure, temperature, CO2/O2, etc.) and their performance signatures, failures/troubleshooting, and monitoring
  • Experience in the design, assembly, testing, certification, and operation of flight hardware 
  • Basic knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures in the field, such as mechanical system design, engineering drawings and sketches, material selection, testing, and office software 
  • Highly organized and self-motivated
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to coordinate support from a wide range of technical disciplines 

Preferred experience:

 

  • Experience with the Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS) which may include but not be limited to carbon dioxide removal systems, oxygen generation systems, and air monitoring systems, waste management systems.
  • Familiarity with NASA organizations, processes, and procedures 
  • Experience working with NASA standards and working knowledge of their implementation.
  • Experience with NASA systems engineering including coordinating system requirements verification and validation between multiple organizations.
